LAM WONG: THE GARDEN YEARS (2019-2022)

In the autumn of 2019, I had the honour and privilege to be the artist in residence at Vancouver’s iconic Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. Originally it was planned for a year long residency to create and organize three art exhibitions based on the idea of artistic and cultural exchange. Then we had the generous funding supports from Vancouver’s Chinatown Legacy Steward Group, the City of Vancouver’s multicultural grant and Province of BC. We launched Solidarity: Exchange and created another two major meaningful art exhibitions. The Garden extended my residency for another year and all together we produced the following five art exhibitions alongside with many workshops and events. These projects contributed to the vibrant artistic excellent of our city and brought together artistic from diverse backgrounds and countries to form a meaningful dialogues and cultural exchanges.

From the very beginning of the Garden residency I intentionally did not plan for any solo exhibition as I felt this is a place for community and diversity, so collaborative art projects are ideal. I used a theme called Cha-He (茶和) or Tea Harmony to create tea spaces and invited many artists and cultural workers to my tea ceremony and collaborate on creative projects.
